Kerala Rain Havoc: Elderly Man Crushed in Sleep

Heavy rains uproot trees, flood rivers, claim one life

Torrential rains battered Kerala overnight, causing widespread destruction, river swelling, and a tragic fatality in Kannur district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for seven districts — Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode — warning of extremely heavy rainfall between 11 and 20 cm in 24 hours.

In Kozhikode, relentless rain and fierce winds uprooted trees, crushed houses and vehicles, and snapped power lines, plunging many areas into darkness. Similar scenes of destruction were reported in Kottayam and Kannur.

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Thettummal, Koothuparamba, where a 78-year-old man named Chandran died after a massive tree crashed onto his house at 2 a.m. while he was sleeping. Police confirmed the area was being battered by rain and gusty winds when the tragedy struck.
