Kerala Opens First Hostel for Transgender Students
Transgender students get dedicated hostel at MG University.
Kerala’s first hostel exclusively for transgender students was inaugurated on Monday at Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the marginalized community. State Social Justice Minister R Bindhu officially opened the facility, which can accommodate at least six students, marking a significant milestone in supporting transgender access to higher education.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Bindhu hailed the initiative as a beacon of social progress, noting a surge in transgender students clearing the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Kerala. “This hostel is a vital step to empower a community fighting numerous challenges,” she said, emphasizing the need for societal support. “Families often reject transgender individuals, making such initiatives crucial for their integration and success.”
The hostel addresses a critical barrier for transgender students, who frequently struggle to secure affordable accommodation due to social stigma and high rental costs. A transgender student at the university described the facility as a “lifesaver,” highlighting how it alleviates financial and social pressures, enabling them to focus on their studies. University officials expressed hope that the hostel will encourage more transgender individuals to pursue higher education, fostering greater representation in academia.

Located on the MG University campus, the hostel is equipped with modern amenities to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. The initiative aligns with Kerala’s progressive policies, including its transgender policy of 2015, which aims to promote equality and inclusion. As the state sets a precedent with this pioneering facility, it sends a powerful message of acceptance, paving the way for other institutions to follow suit in supporting transgender students.
