Kerala CM Refers Vijayan's Case Withdrawal Demand to Home Department

The Kerala government has initiated a review of cases registered against people who staged protests in solidarity with the recent student demonstrations at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said a letter seeking the withdrawal of these cases has been forwarded to the state Home Department for examination. The move follows demands from the Opposition that all such cases be withdrawn without conditions, arguing that those participating in the protests were exercising their democratic right to dissent.

The issue gained political attention after Opposition Leader V D Satheesan urged the state government to withdraw all police cases filed in connection with the solidarity protests held across Kerala. In his communication to the government, Satheesan argued that the cases should be dropped unconditionally, maintaining that the protests were peaceful expressions of support for the students demonstrating in the national capital.

Responding to the request, the Chief Minister's Office stated that the letter has been referred to the Home Department for further action. The department will examine the demand and decide on the appropriate course of action in accordance with existing legal and administrative procedures. No decision has yet been announced regarding whether the registered cases will be withdrawn.

The controversy has also sparked a political exchange over the government's handling of protests. Police sources indicated that cases were registered in connection with protests organised in different parts of Kerala, although the exact number of cases has not been officially confirmed. Authorities have maintained that action was taken based on the circumstances surrounding individual demonstrations and in accordance with applicable laws. The developments come amid continuing political debate over the handling of student protests and related demonstrations across the country.
