Kerala Assembly Election Results 2026 Being Counted Amid Close Contest for LDF

Kerala votes counted today as LDF faces uncertain verdict without exit poll advantage.

The counting of votes for the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026 is underway today, with the state witnessing one of its most closely watched electoral battles in recent years. The contest has been shaped by a triangular fight between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as all 140 constituencies go under the scanner of the Election Commission counting process.

The stakes are particularly high for the LDF, which is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive term in power under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, unlike previous elections, the ruling alliance enters the counting day without clear exit poll comfort, as multiple surveys have indicated a tightening race and a potential surge for the opposition UDF. Exit poll projections have pointed to a neck-and-neck contest, with some even suggesting a possible edge for the Congress-led alliance in certain scenarios.

For the Congress-led UDF, the election is being framed as a referendum on anti-incumbency and governance fatigue. The opposition has aggressively campaigned on issues such as unemployment, inflation pressures, and local administrative concerns, aiming to convert voter dissatisfaction into seat gains. Analysts note that even a modest swing in key constituencies could significantly alter the final balance of power in a state known for narrow electoral margins.

The BJP, meanwhile, is attempting to expand its footprint in Kerala politics, traditionally dominated by a bipolar LDF–UDF contest. While the party remains a distant contender in terms of seat projections, it has focused on select constituencies to build long-term influence. This election cycle is being closely watched for whether the BJP can convert vote share gains into meaningful seat breakthroughs in the state.

Political observers believe that Kerala’s 2026 verdict will hinge on a mix of local anti-incumbency sentiment, strong party organisation at the grassroots level, and the performance of smaller allies and independents. While the LDF retains confidence in its governance record and welfare schemes, the opposition believes changing voter sentiment could reshape the state’s political direction. As counting progresses, Kerala is poised for a decisive verdict that could either reaffirm the LDF’s political stronghold or signal a major shift in the state’s power structure after a decade of Left rule.
