Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev Arrives In New Delhi For BRICS Summit

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India. Tokayev was received at the airport by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, as leaders of BRICS member and partner countries gathered in the national capital for the two-day summit.

The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed Tokayev and described India-Kazakhstan relations as a robust strategic partnership anchored in strong cultural and people-to-people ties. Tokayev is also the chair of the Eurasian Economic Union, and his participation comes as India hosts leaders and representatives from BRICS member countries, partner nations and outreach invitees.

India's BRICS Chairship for 2026 is guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. The theme reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on a people-centric approach rooted in the principle of “Humanity First”. The summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi is focused on strengthening cooperation and addressing key global and regional priorities.

Kazakhstan is among the BRICS partner countries, along with Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The BRICS grouping comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, bringing together major emerging economies from different regions.

India and Kazakhstan have maintained close diplomatic and strategic ties, with cooperation extending beyond government-level engagement to cultural and people-to-people links. Tokayev had earlier extended greetings to Modi on India's Republic Day in January and acknowledged India's economic development, social welfare efforts and growing role on the international stage under Modi's leadership.

In his Republic Day message, Tokayev wished Modi success in his endeavours and conveyed his best wishes for prosperity and progress to the people of India. His visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit provides an opportunity for Kazakhstan to participate in discussions within the expanded BRICS framework and engage with leaders gathered for India's 2026 chairship.
