Karnataka’s Plea: Shivakumar Demands Rs 1.5 Lakh Crore from PM Modi for Bangalore’s Future!
Deputy CM urges massive financial aid to transform Bengaluru’s infrastructure, citing its economic significance.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar made a compelling appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting Rs 1.5 lakh crore in financial assistance to fund critical infrastructure projects in Bengaluru. The request was formally presented through a letter handed over during an event marking the foundation stone laying for Phase-3 of the Bengaluru Metro. The proposed projects aim to address the challenges of rapid urbanization, focusing on mobility, water supply, waste management, drainage, and housing.
Shivakumar highlighted Bengaluru’s pivotal role in India’s economy, noting that Karnataka, as the second-highest tax-paying state, contributes approximately Rs 4.5 lakh crore annually to the national exchequer. He urged the central government to provide funding support comparable to that of Delhi, enabling Bengaluru to emerge as a global metropolis.
The letter outlined key initiatives, including urban tunnels, the Bengaluru Business Corridor, integrated solid waste management plants, elevated roads along metro lines, flyovers, additional drinking water projects, new roads over storm water drains, and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), all requiring an estimated Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
Speaking to PTI Videos on the event’s sidelines, Shivakumar expressed disappointment that his welcome speech, intended to emphasize these projects, was canceled. He underscored Bengaluru’s global significance, citing its status as India’s largest IT/ITES hub, a center for global investments, research institutions, and skilled talent. He referenced international leaders, such as Philippine President Bongbong Marcos, who prioritize visiting Bengaluru to engage with industry leaders. Shivakumar also noted that Prime Minister Modi acknowledged Bengaluru’s importance during their conversation, reinforcing the city’s role in building “Brand India.”
