Karnataka LPG Crisis Highlights Global Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Karnataka LPG crisis exposes global supply chain vulnerabilities

A growing LPG shortage in parts of Karnataka has highlighted how global geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions can quickly translate into domestic fuel stress, affecting households and small businesses dependent on cooking gas.

The disruption comes amid heightened instability in global energy markets, where recent conflicts and trade restrictions have impacted crude oil flows and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply chains. India, which imports a significant share of its LPG requirements, remains exposed to fluctuations in international shipping routes and pricing pressures.

In Karnataka, distributors and consumers in several districts have reported delays in cylinder refills and longer waiting times, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas. While supply has not been completely halted, logistical bottlenecks and inventory pressures have created temporary mismatches between demand and delivery schedules.

Oil marketing companies, which manage LPG distribution across the country, have attributed the strain to a combination of global supply tightening and increased seasonal demand. Transport constraints and port-level delays have further compounded the issue, slowing down the movement of imported LPG cargoes to inland bottling plants.

The situation has revived concerns about India’s dependence on imported cooking fuel and the vulnerability of essential household commodities to external shocks. Experts note that even short-term disruptions in maritime supply routes or global production can ripple quickly into domestic markets, especially in energy-sensitive sectors.

Authorities have stated that supply is expected to stabilise as additional shipments arrive and distribution is streamlined. However, the episode underscores the broader challenge of ensuring energy security in a highly interconnected global system, where geopolitical events can directly impact everyday household consumption.
