Karnataka CM Supports NEET Protests Over Student Concerns

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday expressed support for student protests over the alleged NEET question paper leak controversy, saying the issue concerns the future of young people and should not be viewed through a political lens. He said students across the country are facing uncertainty due to repeated allegations of examination irregularities.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said India was at a critical point where confidence in the examination system needed to be protected. He claimed there had been more than 100 instances of question paper leaks and said the government should have addressed the concerns of students earlier. He added that transparent examinations are essential for maintaining trust among aspirants.

The Chief Minister stressed that students are among India’s biggest strengths and represent the country globally through their talent and achievements. He said all governments have a responsibility to provide quality education and ensure that examination processes remain fair, reliable and free from irregularities.

Responding to calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Shivakumar said accountability should be ensured and that no individual should receive protection if wrongdoing is established. He said investigations should proceed without favour and those responsible should face consequences.

Shivakumar also defended the right of students to hold peaceful demonstrations, describing protests as an important part of democracy. He alleged that some students faced police action, including lathi-charge, during demonstrations and claimed that videos related to the alleged incidents had surfaced despite efforts to restrict their circulation.

The Karnataka Chief Minister also criticised media coverage of the protests, questioning whether adequate attention had been given to students’ concerns. On the alleged attack on Karnataka BJP MLA B.P. Harish near the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office, Shivakumar said he did not support such incidents and added that the Home Minister would take appropriate action while urging political parties to consider previous incidents of violence as well.
