Karnataka Cabinet Allocation: Shivakumar Retains Finance, 13 Ministers Get Portfolios

Cabinet responsibilities allocated as Karnataka's new government settles in.

Newly sworn-in Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has allocated portfolios to 13 members of his Council of Ministers, retaining several key departments under his direct charge. The portfolio distribution was announced on June 4 and has been forwarded to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot for formal approval and notification. The exercise marks an important step in the formation of the new state government following the Cabinet's constitution.

Chief Minister Shivakumar has chosen to retain some of the most influential departments, including Finance, Cabinet Affairs, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), Intelligence, and all portfolios that remain unallocated. The decision underscores the Chief Minister’s intent to maintain direct oversight over the administration's financial and strategic functions as the government begins its new term.

A key highlight of the Cabinet allocation is the induction of Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of former Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee member Siddaramaiah, into the state ministry. In his first ministerial assignment, Yathindra has been entrusted with the Urban Development portfolio. His responsibilities will include oversight of several urban planning and infrastructure agencies, excluding certain Bengaluru-specific authorities such as the Bengaluru Development Authority and Greater Bengaluru Authority.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has been assigned the Revenue and Sports portfolios, while senior leader K.H. Muniyappa will head the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department. K.J. George has been given charge of Energy and Tourism, and M.B. Patil will oversee Large and Medium Industries along with Infrastructure Development. Ramalinga Reddy has been entrusted with the Major and Medium Irrigation Department, also known as the Water Resources Ministry, while Satish Jarkiholi will once again handle the Public Works Department.

Several ministers have been assigned portfolios linked to Bengaluru’s governance and the state’s technology sector. Krishna Byre Gowda will oversee Greater Bengaluru Development, including major civic and infrastructure bodies such as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited. Priyank Kharge has been allocated the Home Department, excluding Intelligence, along with Information Technology, Biotechnology, and e-Governance. U.T. Khader has been entrusted with the Health and Family Welfare Department.

Other key allocations include Transport to Byrathi Suresh, Medical Education and Skill Development to Sharan Prakash Patil, and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj to Eshwar Khandre. The portfolio distribution completes a crucial phase in the establishment of the new Karnataka government and signals the administrative priorities of the Shivakumar-led Cabinet. The Governor’s approval is expected to formalize the allocations, enabling ministers to assume full charge of their respective departments.
