Karnataka Allows Teachers to Use 'Tr' Prefix as Mark of Respect

Teachers in Karnataka will be allowed to use the prefix “Tr” before their names as a mark of professional recognition, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Teachers’ Day. The decision is intended to acknowledge the contribution of educators and their role in shaping society. Shivakumar said the prefix would provide teachers with a distinct form of recognition, similar to professional prefixes used by doctors, engineers and professors.

The Chief Minister said the decision was taken following discussions in the State Cabinet and described “Tr” as more than simply a title. According to Shivakumar, it represents the lifetime of service provided by teachers who educate, guide and influence successive generations. He said teachers play an important role in developing the knowledge, character and future of children and therefore deserve formal recognition for their contribution.

In a post on X, Shivakumar highlighted the scale of the teaching community, saying India has more than one crore teachers, including nearly 4.5 lakh in Karnataka. He said teachers are responsible for helping shape the minds and character of children and contribute indirectly to the development of the nation. The Chief Minister noted that professionals across fields such as medicine, engineering, agriculture, administration and business have benefited from the guidance of teachers during their formative years.

Shivakumar said the new prefix would serve as a distinct mark of respect for educators in Karnataka. He also emphasised the broader social importance of the teaching profession, saying that teachers guide, correct and encourage students while helping them recognise their potential. He described teachers, along with soldiers, workers and farmers, as among the pillars of society and said respecting those who serve the country is a responsibility of the government.

Speaking after launching the Praja Seva Abhiyan in Kudligi in Vijayanagara district, Shivakumar referred to Teachers’ Day and its association with the birth anniversary of former President and educationist Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He said professionals in several fields receive recognition based on their occupations and argued that teachers should similarly receive professional recognition. Shivakumar described himself as an “education enthusiast” while explaining the government’s decision.

The announcement places emphasis on recognising teachers not only as educators but also as contributors to wider social development. Shivakumar said a society that honours its teachers is effectively honouring its own future, reflecting the government’s stated intention behind introducing the “Tr” prefix. The measure is expected to give teachers across Karnataka a distinct professional designation while reinforcing the State’s message about the importance of education and those who provide it.
