Kanniyakumari Traders Protest Eviction, Disrupting Tourist Activity

Kanniyakumari traders continue protesting eviction, affecting tourism and local businesses in the coastal district.

Traders in Kanniyakumari continued their protest against ongoing eviction notices on Thursday, causing disruptions in local commerce and affecting tourist activity in the coastal town, officials said. The demonstrations, now entering their third day, reflect mounting tension between authorities and shopkeepers over proposed clearance of commercial establishments near prime tourist areas.

Local traders have alleged that the eviction notices were issued without adequate consultation and have demanded more time to relocate their businesses. They argued that abrupt enforcement would severely impact livelihoods and expressed concern over a lack of compensation or alternative arrangements. Protestors blocked roads and set up picket lines in key market areas, further affecting movement and daily operations.

Tourists visiting Kanniyakumari, known for landmarks such as the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue, reported delays and inconvenience due to traffic snarls and restricted access to popular spots. Hoteliers and tour operators said the ongoing protests could affect the town’s tourism revenue if the situation persists.

Authorities have maintained that the eviction process is part of an effort to regulate commercial activity and ensure proper urban planning around sensitive coastal zones. Officials added that the notices were issued in compliance with legal guidelines and that relocation plans for affected traders are being considered.

Negotiations between traders’ representatives and local administration are reportedly ongoing, with both sides exploring solutions to resolve the deadlock. Meanwhile, police have been deployed to manage crowds and ensure public safety during the protests.

Observers noted that the Kanniyakumari protest underscores broader challenges in balancing urban development, tourism management, and the rights of local businesses. Effective dialogue and phased implementation of regulations may be critical to preventing prolonged disruptions in the region.
