Kangana Ranaut Hits Out Kunal Kamra: Disgracing in The Name of Comedy

Ranaut, however, dismissed comparisons between this incident and the 2020 demolition of her Mumbai office by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation

Actor and MP Kangana Ranaut weighed in on the controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra’s remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, calling it an act of “disgracing someone in the name of comedy.”

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Tuesday, the BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi questioned the credibility of comedians who mock public figures. "You may be anyone, but disrespecting others is not right. Shinde ji used to drive an auto-rickshaw, and today, he has made it here on his own. What are Kamra’s credentials?" she said.

Kamra recently performed a parody of a song from ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’, allegedly referring to Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor) while also making jokes about Maharashtra’s political developments, including the Shiv Sena and NCP splits.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commented on the controversy on Monday, saying Kamra should apologize for his "low-level comedy." Supporting this, Ranaut stressed the need for accountability. "These people call themselves influencers. But where is society headed for this 2-minute fame? As Fadnavis ji said, we have to take responsibility for our words. There could be repercussions. Would you stand by them when questioned legally?"

The row escalated on Sunday night when Shiv Sena members vandalized Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area, where Kamra’s show took place, along with a hotel housing the club.

Ranaut dismissed comparisons between this incident and the 2020 demolition of her Mumbai office by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), saying, "That was completely illegal. This is absolutely legal. They can’t be clubbed together."
