Kamikaze Drones, Armed UAVs! What is Pakistan Using To Target Indian Airspace

Pakistani Kamikaze Drones, Armed UAVs Target Indian Airspace Amid Escalating Conflict

Pakistan deployed an array of aerial assets, including kamikaze drones, swarm drones, and armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to breach Indian airspace in a bid to strike military and civilian targets during the ongoing Indo-Pak conflict, military sources revealed.

However, India’s robust air defense systems effectively neutralized these intrusions, underscoring the strength of its layered defense grid.

Kamikaze drones, also known as suicide drones, are designed to crash into targets with explosive payloads, self-destructing upon impact.

A military source noted that while drones have been pivotal in conflicts like Armenia-Azerbaijan and Russia-Ukraine, their large-scale use in the India-Pakistan context marks a significant escalation. “This is seemingly the first time drones have been used on such a scale between the two nations,” the source said.

On the night of May 8-9, Pakistan violated Indian airspace at 36 locations along the International Border and Line of Control, from Leh to Sir Creek, using 300–400 drones, including Turkish-made ASISGUARD Songar drones.

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, at a May 9 briefing alongside Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, said the intrusions aimed to test India’s air defenses and gather intelligence. India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and S-400 systems neutralized many drones, with forensic analysis of debris ongoing. An armed Pakistani UAV targeting Bathinda military station was also detected and destroyed.

On Saturday, Pakistan launched Byker YIHA III kamikaze drones toward Amritsar at 5 AM, aiming for civilian areas.

The Indian Army’s Air Defence (AAD) units swiftly intercepted them using quick-reaction guns, ensuring no civilian casualties or property damage. “The drones carried high-explosive payloads to maximize destruction,” a defense source said, highlighting India’s vigilant radar and electro-optical systems.

The conflict, intensified by India’s May 10 missile strikes on Pakistani airbases following Pakistan’s May 8 drone attacks, has heightened regional anxiety. The Ministry of Defence condemned Pakistan’s use of armed drones targeting civilians and religious sites, reaffirming India’s commitment to sovereignty.
