#JustIn:Mobile Internet Suspended in Kishtwar Areas Over Security Concerns

Mobile internet suspended in parts of Kishtwar, J&K, for security reasons on January 30.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday temporarily suspended mobile Internet services in parts of Kishtwar district as a precautionary measure to maintain public order and security. The affected areas include Singhpora, Chingam, and Chatroo, where 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G services will remain blocked from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on January 30.

The order, issued by Principal Secretary of the Home Department Chandraker Bharti, follows inputs from the Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone. Authorities cited the potential misuse of high-speed mobile data by anti-national elements as a threat to the safety and sovereignty of the union territory.

The suspension covers a six-kilometre radius around each of the identified locations and has been implemented under the provisions of the Telecommunication Act, 2023, and the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024. Such measures have been frequently used in the UT to prevent terrorist activities and maintain law and order.

Recent incidents prompted the move, including a cordon-and-search operation in Singhpora where terrorists fired on a joint security force team, killing one paratrooper and injuring seven others. Authorities emphasized that the Internet suspension aims to limit communication channels for militants and prevent further attacks.

The UT Home Department also noted that VPN usage has been banned in many districts as terrorists and anti-social elements exploit virtual networks to conceal their identities. Officials stressed that such preventive measures are crucial to safeguard both civilian life and the integrity of security operations.

Security experts highlighted that temporary communication restrictions, though inconvenient for the public, have proven effective in counterterrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that mobile services are restored once the threat subsides.
