#JustIn: Meitei Man Abducted and Executed in Churachandpur
A chilling abduction and killing reignites ethnic strife in Manipur’s volatile hills.
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across Manipur, a Meitei man was kidnapped from his home and brutally shot dead by suspected Kuki militants in Churachandpur district. The victim, Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh, was abducted along with his Kuki wife from the Tuibong area on Wednesday. A disturbing video circulating online shows the man desperately pleading for his life before being executed at close range, highlighting the grim reality of the ongoing conflict.
Police have recovered Singh’s body near Natjang village, while his wife was released unharmed. Authorities suspect the involvement of the United Kuki National Army (UNKA), a militant group that has not signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the central and state governments. Singh, originally from Kakching district, had returned from Nepal on January 19 and was staying in Churachandpur with his wife’s family, reportedly with local approval despite the ethnic divide.
The couple’s inter-community marriage had allowed limited movement in a region where Meitei and Kuki areas remain strictly segregated since the violence erupted in May 2023. This latest killing breaks a relative lull in major incidents and comes amid broader peace efforts and discussions on governance in the state. It underscores the fragility of any calm in the ethnic fault lines that have claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.

Authorities have launched a search operation to track down the perpetrators and registered a case. The viral video has intensified public outrage and calls for swift justice, with protests reported in some areas. The incident serves as a stark reminder that deep-seated tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities continue to threaten stability in Manipur.
