#JustIn: Mansa Devi Temple Stampede detailed report
Deadly stampede at Mansa Devi temple!
A devastating stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar claimed six lives and injured 28 devotees on Sunday morning, triggered by rumors of an electric current on the temple stairs. The incident, occurring around 9 AM, saw a massive crowd of pilgrims, gathered for the holy month of Shravan, surge toward the narrow entrance of the hilltop shrine, perched over 500 feet in the Shivalik Hills.
Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal reported that 34 people were hospitalized, with six fatalities confirmed, including a 12-year-old boy, Arush, and three 18-year-olds, Shakal Dev, Vicky, and Vipin, alongside Vakil and Shanti. Five critically injured victims were transferred to AIIMS Rishikesh.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a magisterial probe, vowing strict action against those spreading the false rumor of broken electric wires, which District Magistrate Mayur Dixit noted may have contributed to the panic. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire brigade swiftly launched rescue operations. Dhami announced ₹2 lakh compensation for the deceased’s families and ₹50,000 for the injured, personally visiting victims at the district hospital.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, with Murmu stating, “The news of the deaths is deeply painful,” and Modi offering condolences on X, ensuring local support for those affected.
The revered Mansa Devi temple, one of Haridwar’s Panch Tirthas, sees massive crowds during Shravan, highlighting ongoing challenges in crowd management at religious sites.
