#JUSTIN: Autopsy Rules Homicide in Death of Cuban Detainee at Texas ICE Facility

Autopsy finds asphyxia homicide in ICE detainee's death; DHS cites resisted suicide attempt.

The recent death of Cuban detainee Geraldo Lunas Campos, 55, at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Texas has been officially ruled a homicide by the El Paso County Office of the Medical Examiner. Multiple media reports citing an autopsy conducted by deputy medical examiner Adam C. Gonzalez stated that the cause of death was “asphyxia due to neck and torso compression”, highlighting the violent circumstances surrounding the incident.

Campos died on January 3 at Camp East Montana while under ICE custody after reportedly experiencing “medical distress,” according to an earlier statement by the agency. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under which ICE operates, provided further details, stating that Campos attempted to take his own life while in federal custody. Security staff immediately intervened to prevent the act, but Campos allegedly resisted forcefully, continuing to struggle and ultimately losing consciousness during the confrontation. DHS confirmed that the incident remains under active investigation.

The reports have drawn attention to longstanding concerns about conditions in ICE detention facilities. According to agency data, at least 30 people died in ICE custody in 2025, the highest number in two decades, raising questions about detainee safety and the adequacy of medical and mental health protocols. Campos is among four immigrants who have died in federal immigration custody in the first 10 days of 2026, underscoring a troubling trend in the early part of the year.

When reached for comment, DHS spokespersons reiterated that all security measures were taken to safeguard Campos’s life, emphasising that staff acted in response to a life-threatening situation. “The security staff immediately intervened to save his life. Campos violently resisted the security staff and continued to attempt to take his life,” the spokesperson said, adding that the incident is being thoroughly reviewed.

While ICE has maintained that it prioritises the safety and well-being of detainees, advocacy groups and experts have long criticised the agency for systemic issues, including overcrowding, insufficient mental health support, and delayed medical attention. The ruling of homicide in Campos’s case is likely to intensify scrutiny on the agency and prompt renewed calls for reform.

Neither the El Paso County Office of the Medical Examiner nor ICE immediately provided additional public comments, and Reuters noted that the media reports citing the autopsy have not been independently verified. Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances leading to Campos’s death, including the role of detention protocols and staff actions.

This incident has sparked broader discussions about accountability in federal immigration facilities, particularly as ICE faces increased criticism for repeated fatalities under its watch. Observers note that deaths in custody often raise complex questions about the balance between detainee rights, security measures, and the adequacy of institutional safeguards.
