J&K Police Arrest Four Drug Peddlers In Sopore Anti-Drug Operation
Sopore Police arrest four drug peddlers and recover narcotics in two operations.
Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town have arrested four alleged drug peddlers in two separate operations and recovered a significant quantity of narcotic and psychotropic substances, officials said on June 4. The action comes under the ongoing “100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan”, a statewide anti-drug campaign aimed at curbing drug trafficking and substance abuse.
In the first operation, a police team from Police Station Sopore was conducting routine patrolling in the Badambagh area when it spotted three individuals carrying bags on a link road. According to officials, the suspects attempted to flee into nearby orchards after noticing the police presence but were quickly apprehended. A search of the trio led to the recovery of 150 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, a controlled psychotropic substance often misused for recreational intoxication.
The accused have been identified as residents of Badambagh: Irfan Ahmad Peer, Ajaz Ahmad Mattoo, and Umer Zahoor Najar. Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation has been launched to trace the supply chain and distribution network linked to the seized contraband.

In a second operation conducted during night checking at Sangrama-Seer Crossing, personnel from Police Post Putkha intercepted another suspect. The individual, identified as Majid Ashraf Khan of Peth Seer, was found in possession of Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules during a personal search. A separate case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway to determine the source of the drugs.
Officials said the back-to-back arrests highlight intensified enforcement efforts by Sopore Police to dismantle local narcotics networks and prevent the spread of drug abuse, particularly among youth. Authorities added that sustained surveillance and targeted operations are being carried out across the region to identify and neutralise trafficking routes.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance approach, police warned that strict legal action will continue against anyone involved in drug trafficking. They also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information related to drug-related activities to help build a safer and drug-free society.
