J&K Minister Promises Action Against Officials Who Demolished Gujjar-Bakarwal Homes

Jammu and Kashmir’s Forest and Tribal Affairs Minister Javed Rana assured the Gujjar-Bakarwal community on Eid that the government would take strict action against officials responsible for the demolition of their homes in the Raika Bandi forests of Sidra in Jammu. Rana, himself a Gurjar leader, reached out to the community amid growing protests over the demolitions, promising accountability irrespective of the position or influence of those involved. He stated that two separate inquiry committees have been constituted to investigate the incidents thoroughly.

The first committee, under the tribal affairs department, will examine alleged violations of the Forest Rights Act provisions that protect the rights of tribals to reside in forest areas. The second committee has been tasked with determining whether proper protocols and procedures were followed before carrying out the demolitions. Rana emphasised that action would be initiated against the concerned officials once the enquiry reports are submitted, aiming to address the grievances of the affected nomadic community.

The ongoing demolition row in the Raika Bandi forests has sparked significant concern among Gujjar-Bakarwals, who depend on forest lands for their traditional livelihood and seasonal migration.
