J&K Minister Promises Action Against Officials Who Demolished Gujjar-Bakarwal Homes

J&K minister promises action against officials over home demolitions.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Forest and Tribal Affairs Minister Javed Rana assured the Gujjar-Bakarwal community on Eid that the government would take strict action against officials responsible for the demolition of their homes in the Raika Bandi forests of Sidra in Jammu. Rana, himself a Gurjar leader, reached out to the community amid growing protests over the demolitions, promising accountability irrespective of the position or influence of those involved. He stated that two separate inquiry committees have been constituted to investigate the incidents thoroughly.

The first committee, under the tribal affairs department, will examine alleged violations of the Forest Rights Act provisions that protect the rights of tribals to reside in forest areas. The second committee has been tasked with determining whether proper protocols and procedures were followed before carrying out the demolitions. Rana emphasised that action would be initiated against the concerned officials once the enquiry reports are submitted, aiming to address the grievances of the affected nomadic community.

The ongoing demolition row in the Raika Bandi forests has sparked significant concern among Gujjar-Bakarwals, who depend on forest lands for their traditional livelihood and seasonal migration. The minister’s statement on the auspicious occasion of Eid comes as an attempt to reassure the community and de-escalate tensions. His assurance reflects the government’s commitment to balancing forest conservation with the protection of tribal rights in the Union Territory.

Rana’s intervention holds particular significance as he represents the Gujjar community politically, positioning himself as a bridge between the administration and the affected groups. The promises of inquiry and action are expected to bring some relief to families who lost their shelters in the recent operations. Local leaders and community representatives have welcomed the minister’s words while calling for swift implementation of the assurances.

The Forest Rights Act continues to be a key point of contention in such cases across Jammu and Kashmir, where traditional forest-dwelling communities often find themselves at odds with conservation and development priorities. The establishment of the two committees indicates a structured approach by the administration to address both legal and procedural aspects of the demolitions. Observers are closely watching how the inquiries unfold in the coming weeks.

As Eid celebrations continue, the focus remains on restoring trust between the government and the Gujjar-Bakarwal community. The minister’s public commitment is likely to influence the political and social narrative in the region, especially ahead of future policy decisions on forest management and tribal welfare. The resolution of this issue could set a precedent for handling similar disputes in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
