Jharkhand Scraps 44 Recruitment Exams, Including JSSC, JPSC, Amid Student Protests

Jharkhand cancels 44 exams amid student protests.

The Jharkhand government has cancelled at least 44 recruitment examinations following weeks of student-led protests in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive tests. The decision covers examinations conducted for several government posts, including those administered by the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) and Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC). The state's Personnel Department issued a notification earlier this week after a special Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday. The move follows sustained demonstrations by students demanding action over alleged irregularities and seeking greater transparency in the recruitment process.

The cancellations affect examinations for a range of government positions. Tests for recruitment to posts including civil judges in the junior division, assistant public prosecutors and dentists have also been included in the list. The scale of the cancellations means candidates preparing for multiple government recruitment examinations will now have to await further decisions from the state authorities. Student protests had intensified in Ranchi in recent weeks, with candidates raising concerns over the recruitment process and demanding that the government address allegations of irregularities. The demonstrations put increasing pressure on the state administration to review the examinations and take steps to restore confidence among candidates.

The government's decision comes after the Cabinet considered the concerns surrounding the examinations. The Personnel Department notification formalises the decision to cancel the affected tests, although candidates will need further information on the next steps, including whether and when fresh examinations will be conducted. The issue is particularly significant for thousands of young people preparing for government recruitment examinations in Jharkhand. Competitive government exams attract large numbers of applicants, with candidates often spending months preparing for tests and completing the required application and eligibility procedures.

The cancellation of examinations can therefore create uncertainty for candidates who have already invested considerable time and resources in preparation. At the same time, the government's decision signals an attempt to address concerns over the integrity of the recruitment process amid allegations raised by protesting students. Among the examinations affected are tests linked to important government and judicial positions. Recruitment for civil judges, assistant public prosecutors and dentists, alongside examinations conducted through JSSC and JPSC, demonstrates the broad scope of the government's decision. The protests also underline the importance of transparency and credibility in public recruitment.

Candidates appearing for competitive examinations depend on authorities to ensure that question papers, examination procedures, evaluation and selection are conducted fairly. Allegations of irregularities can undermine confidence in the entire process and prompt demands for corrective action. The state government's decision now shifts the focus to the next stage of the recruitment process. Candidates are likely to await details about revised schedules, fresh examinations and any additional measures intended to address the concerns that triggered the protests. With at least 44 recruitment examinations cancelled, the move represents a major intervention in Jharkhand's government hiring process. The decision follows sustained student pressure and the Cabinet's review of the issue, while further announcements will determine how the affected recruitment exercises are conducted in the future.
