Jharkhand Protest Escalates: Police Report 14 Personnel Injured During Clashes

Fourteen police personnel were injured during a protest march by job aspirants towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday, prompting police to use water cannons, tear gas and what officials described as a “mild lathi-charge” to control the protesters. The agitation, which began over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment examinations, entered its 17th day as students continued their demands. Police said they would examine CCTV footage from the protest site to identify people they described as “anti-social elements” who allegedly disrupted what officials characterised as a peaceful students’ demonstration.

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan said the footage would be analysed to determine who was responsible for disturbances during the march. The police version comes amid allegations and counter-allegations surrounding Monday’s confrontation near the Assembly. Ranjan told reporters that 14 policemen sustained injuries during the protest. He said the police had to resort to a “mild lathi-charge” after the situation became difficult to control. Water cannons and tear gas were also used as police attempted to prevent the protesting job aspirants from proceeding towards the Assembly.

The police officer maintained that the action was taken to control the situation rather than target the students’ broader protest. The protesters have been demonstrating over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted in Jharkhand. The agitation has continued for 17 days, with job aspirants seeking action on their concerns and demanding that the authorities address issues they have raised regarding the examination process. Monday’s march towards the Assembly represented an escalation in the ongoing agitation, bringing the protesters into direct confrontation with security personnel deployed to manage the demonstration.

The police said the protesters themselves were not necessarily responsible for all the disturbances witnessed during the march and that CCTV footage would help identify those who allegedly disrupted the demonstration. Ranjan referred to the main student protest as peaceful while alleging that certain anti-social elements created problems. The police decision to review video footage is expected to help establish what happened during the confrontation and identify individuals whom authorities believe were involved in any disruption.

The latest confrontation has added another chapter to the prolonged dispute between protesting job aspirants and the Jharkhand authorities. With the agitation now in its 17th day, the use of tear gas, water cannons and a lathi-charge, even if described by police as mild, has highlighted the growing tension surrounding the demonstrations. The injuries suffered by 14 police personnel are also likely to become part of the continuing debate over how Monday’s protest was handled. As police examine CCTV footage, the recruitment examination allegations remain at the centre of the students’ movement and their continuing demands for action from the government.
