Jharkhand Government Begins Dialogue With Protesting Job Aspirants in Ranchi

The Jharkhand government has initiated talks with students protesting alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations after their agitation entered its 12th day. Hundreds of aspirants have joined an indefinite sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, turning the protest into a major movement demanding transparency, accountability and an independent investigation into the recruitment process.

The agitation began after the results of the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission Preliminary Examination, or JPSC PT, were announced on July 5. Aspirants alleged irregularities in the examination and have since organised round-the-clock demonstrations. Protesters also held a Tiranga Yatra in Ranchi on Wednesday, intensifying pressure on the Hemant Soren-led government to respond to their concerns.

Ranchi Sub-Divisional Officer Kumar Rajat visited the protest site on Wednesday and conveyed the government’s willingness to discuss the allegations. He asked the students to nominate a delegation of five to seven representatives and said the administration was prepared to examine every issue through dialogue. The government has also constituted a committee of ministers and officials to hold discussions with the protesters.

The students, however, rejected the proposal for closed-door negotiations and demanded that any meeting be conducted publicly in the presence of the media and cameras. Student leader Devendra Mahato, who has been on a hunger strike for five days, said the protesters would nominate their representatives but would continue their fast and agitation until their demands were fulfilled.

The protesters have sought a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry, while the government maintains that the Criminal Investigation Department is already investigating the allegations. The CID arrested TDPL accountant Rakshak Singh in Lucknow on Wednesday and brought him to Ranchi. TDPL was the agency responsible for conducting the examination, and Singh had reportedly also cleared the preliminary test. Five additional arrests have taken the total number of people apprehended in the case to 20. A Special Investigation Team is examining digital records, application logs and related documents.

The agitation has also triggered political reactions. The BJP questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence and criticised both him and Chief Minister Hemant Soren over their response to the protesters. Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari said the government had opened the door for dialogue and would consider reasonable demands. Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke also announced support for the movement, saying party members would travel to Jharkhand to back the protesting job aspirants.
