Jharkhand Forms Committee to Probe Medical Student’s Shocking Suicide

Jharkhand forms panel to investigate medical student’s suicide after protests.

The East Singhbhum district administration in Jharkhand has established a high-level committee to investigate the tragic death of Divyanshu Pandey, a 21-year-old third-year student at Manipal Medical College in Jamshedpur, who allegedly died by suicide on August 21, 2025. The committee, led by Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) Bhagirath Prasad, includes Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Dhalbhum) Chandrajit Singh and Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ-1) Bhola Prasad, and is tasked with submitting a detailed report within a week, as directed by Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi.

Pandey, a resident of Samstipur, Bihar, reportedly consumed poison in his hostel room, prompting widespread student protests on Saturday outside the college campus. Demonstrators accused the college administration of negligence, alleging delays in arranging an ambulance and claiming a senior official harassed students. In response, the college suspended the employee responsible for transportation and formed an internal committee to probe the allegations.

The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about administrative accountability and student welfare at the institution. The district administration’s swift action underscores the urgency of addressing the circumstances surrounding Pandey’s death, with the committee’s findings expected to shed light on the allegations and guide future preventive measures.
