Jharkhand Faces Heavy Rain With IMD Issuing Orange and Yellow Alerts

Multiple districts brace for downpours, thunderstorms, and temperature dips during the festive season.

Heavy rainfall battered parts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Koderma, Chatra, and Hazaribag, on Wednesday, with showers continuing into Thursday, coinciding with the Dusshera festival. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Garhwa, Palamu, and Chatra, signalling significant rainfall and potential disruptions. A yellow alert was also issued for Latehar, Hazaribag, Bokaro, Koderma, Giridih, and Dhanbad, extending to October 4, as the state braces for more wet weather, officials confirmed.

The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall across many areas on Thursday, with heavy showers at isolated locations. On Friday, the state could see light to moderate rain at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Heavy showers are also expected at isolated spots on October 4. Abhishek Anand, in charge of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, noted that isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 40 kmph are likely across Jharkhand until October 6, posing risks of localised flooding and travel disruptions.

Additional districts, including Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Ranchi, Khunti, West Singhbhum, Bokaro, Seraikela-Kharsawan, East Singhbhum, Ramgarh, and Dhanbad, are under a yellow alert until October 3. The IMD also predicted a temperature drop of 3-5 degrees Celsius over the next three days, potentially offering relief from humid conditions but increasing the risk of weather-related challenges during the festive season.

The ongoing rainfall, driven by a regional weather system, underscores the need for preparedness in Jharkhand, particularly in vulnerable low-lying areas. Authorities have urged residents to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions to ensure safety during the adverse conditions.
