JD(S) MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur Criticises Govt Over Drought Notification Omission

Gurmitkal Janata Dal (Secular) MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur has criticized the Karnataka government for leaving Gurmitkal and Yadgir taluks out of its latest drought-hit notification. Kandkur said the decision was unfair given the rainfall deficit and worsening conditions faced by farmers in the region. He questioned the basis on which the government assessed drought conditions and warned that the exclusion could prevent affected farmers from receiving essential relief and support.

The MLA pointed to the condition of agricultural fields in Gurmitkal, where crops have reportedly suffered because of inadequate rainfall. He displayed photographs showing withering crops as evidence of the difficulties being faced by farmers. According to Kandkur, the ground situation in the taluk indicates significant agricultural distress and warrants its inclusion among areas officially recognised as drought-affected.

Kandkur also expressed concern about the exclusion of Yadgir taluk from the notification. He argued that rainfall shortages have affected agricultural activity and created financial difficulties for farming families. The MLA said government assessments should reflect conditions on the ground rather than rely solely on administrative criteria that could leave genuinely affected areas without access to drought-relief measures.

The government’s drought notification is significant because recognition as a drought-hit area can enable farmers to access various forms of assistance and relief. Such measures can include support related to crop losses, drinking water requirements, livestock and other consequences of inadequate rainfall. Kandkur maintained that farmers in Gurmitkal and Yadgir should not be denied such assistance when their crops have been affected by the prevailing conditions.

The MLA warned that he would consider launching a protest if the State government did not reconsider its decision. He called on the authorities to review the situation in Gurmitkal and Yadgir and conduct an assessment based on the actual condition of crops and rainfall in the affected areas. Kandkur said the government should respond to farmers’ concerns before the situation becomes more difficult.

The demand comes amid continuing concerns over rainfall shortages and agricultural losses in parts of Karnataka. Kandkur’s criticism puts pressure on the State government to reassess the drought notification and consider whether additional taluks should be included. Farmers in Gurmitkal and Yadgir are now awaiting the government’s response to the MLA’s demand for recognition and relief.
