Jauhar University Demolition: Group Appeals To UP CM For Immediate Intervention
Group urges Yogi to stop Jauhar demolition.
A civil society group has urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to halt the proposed demolition of 38 buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, appealing to the state government to consider the impact of the action on students and explore possible regulatory solutions before taking any irreversible steps. Citizens for Fraternity - Bharat (CFF-Bharat) submitted a formal letter to the Chief Minister, requesting that authorities prioritise the future of students enrolled at the university while addressing any legal or regulatory issues through available remedies.
The group said that any action affecting an educational institution should take into account principles of natural justice, proportionality, and public interest. The letter was signed by several prominent citizens, including former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, former diplomat Ashok Sharma, industrialist Saeed Mustafa Shervani, senior business leader Navaid Khan, and journalist Javed M. Ansari, among others. CFF-Bharat stated that a university should not be viewed merely as a collection of buildings but as a centre of education that contributes to the academic, intellectual, and social development of students.
The organisation said that any action disrupting the education of students requires careful consideration. “While we fully respect the rule of law and recognise that all institutions must comply with statutory requirements, we humbly appeal that any action affecting an educational institution be guided by the principles of natural justice, proportionality, and the larger public interest,” the letter said. The group requested that if there are violations related to legal or regulatory requirements, authorities should first allow opportunities for correction and ensure that all legal procedures and judicial remedies are exhausted before proceeding with demolition.

It said such an approach would maintain both compliance with the law and constitutional values of fairness and justice. The appeal comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, which has faced legal and regulatory challenges. The proposed demolition of structures has raised concerns among sections of civil society, who have called for a balanced approach that protects students while addressing government concerns. CFF-Bharat said it was committed to promoting fraternity, dialogue, and national harmony, and appealed to the Uttar Pradesh government to adopt a compassionate approach.
The organisation emphasised that protecting students’ educational interests should remain a priority while ensuring that institutions follow applicable regulations. The group’s appeal highlights the broader debate over balancing regulatory enforcement with the need to safeguard students and academic continuity. It urged the state government to consider measures that prevent disruption to education while allowing lawful processes to continue. The Uttar Pradesh government and relevant authorities are expected to proceed according to legal procedures regarding the university structures. Further developments will depend on official decisions and any legal proceedings related to the proposed demolition.
