Janakpuri Tragedy: Three DJB Engineers Suspended, Probe Ordered, Compensation Promised

Three Delhi Jal Board engineers suspended after motorcyclist dies falling into uncovered pit in Janakpuri.

Three engineers of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) have been suspended after a motorcyclist died after allegedly falling into a large construction pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri area, officials said on Friday. The incident has prompted the Delhi government to order a probe and announce action against those responsible for lapses at the site.

The victim, identified as Kamal, died on Friday morning after his motorcycle allegedly plunged into what residents described as a “pool-sized” pit dug by the water agency as part of an ongoing project. The pit was reportedly left inadequately secured, raising serious questions about safety measures at the construction site.

Delhi’s water minister, Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, inspected the site after the incident was reported and ordered the immediate suspension of three DJB officers—an executive engineer, an assistant engineer, and a junior engineer. Speaking to reporters, Verma said it was the responsibility of these officers to monitor the progress and safety of the work being carried out at the location.

“The work has been going on for the last three months, but the pit was dug on Thursday. It was the duty of the officers concerned to ensure proper supervision and safety arrangements,” the minister said. He added that strict action would also be taken against the company executing the project.

Verma further said the Delhi Jal Board would provide compensation to the victim’s family. He emphasized that negligence leading to loss of life would not be tolerated and that accountability would be fixed once the investigation is completed.

Officials confirmed that a detailed inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident, including whether safety norms were violated. The case has once again highlighted concerns over poorly secured construction sites in the city and the risks they pose to commuters, particularly during nighttime and low-visibility conditions.
