Jammu Teen With Prosthetic Leg Continues Pursuit of Medical Career

Eighteen-year-old Kavita Arora from Jammu continues to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor despite years of medical challenges and a setback in the NEET examination. Born with a congenital deformity and having undergone an above-the-knee amputation at the age of five, Kavita says the recent NEET re-examination affected her performance but has not diminished her determination to secure admission to a medical college. She is currently in Pune for a routine medical review and maintenance of her prosthetic limb.

Kavita was born without a right knee joint and with two fingers on her right hand and four on her left due to a congenital condition. After undergoing an above-the-knee amputation when she was five years old, she was fitted with a prosthetic leg at the Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) in Pune a year later. Since then, she has regularly visited the centre for follow-up treatment and maintenance, enabling her to continue her education and daily activities with greater mobility.

Speaking about her academic journey, Kavita said she could not attend coaching classes regularly because walking long distances was sometimes difficult. Despite these challenges, she prepared independently for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and was optimistic about her performance in the initial examination held in May. She said she had expected to score more than 300 marks based on her preparation before the examination process was affected by the paper leak controversy.

According to Kavita, the subsequent re-examination disrupted her preparation and affected her confidence. She said the uncertainty surrounding the examination left her distracted and prevented her from performing to the best of her abilities in the second test. However, she emphasised that the setback would not discourage her from pursuing a career in medicine and that she remains committed to achieving her long-term goal of becoming a doctor.

During her visit to Pune, Kavita was among several amputee patients who interacted with Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan during his visit to the Artificial Limb Centre's Saksham Mobility Clinic. The interaction highlighted the rehabilitation and support provided by the centre to individuals using prosthetic limbs and showcased stories of resilience among patients overcoming physical challenges through advanced rehabilitation services.

Kavita's journey reflects perseverance in the face of significant physical and academic challenges. Despite undergoing multiple medical procedures, adapting to life with a prosthetic limb and facing disruptions during one of India's most competitive entrance examinations, she remains focused on her ambition of entering the medical profession. Her story underscores the determination of many aspiring students who continue striving towards their goals despite personal and systemic obstacles.
