Jammu Schools Reopen Post-Floods with Strict Safety Protocols

Classrooms resume after two-week closure amid structural checks.

Schools across the Jammu zone reopened on September 10, 2025, following a fortnight-long closure triggered by heavy rains, floods, and landslides that began on August 26. The relentless downpour caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, forcing educational institutions to suspend operations. An education department official confirmed the reopening, noting that some schools may remain closed due to structural damage.

The return to classrooms brought enthusiasm among students eager to reconnect with peers and teachers. Sunita, a class 8 student at a local convent school, expressed relief, stating, “We are happy to return to school and meet our friends... Now we will focus on completing the syllabus.” Similarly, Arvind from KC School shared, “It was boring to stay at home. We love coming to school and playing.” Teachers, too, are determined to recover lost time. “We will work hard to make up for the loss of one fortnight,” said one educator.

To ensure safety, the Director of School Education Jammu mandated that no offline classes resume in government or private schools without a valid structural safety certificate issued by a competent authority. School Management Committees and Heads of Institutions are required to assess preparedness and obtain these certificates. Schools deemed structurally sound may submit an undertaking to chief or zonal education officers to bypass the audit, ensuring swift resumption of classes while prioritizing student safety.
