Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Demands Transparency Over Demolition Drives
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind alleges biased demolitions, raises concerns over electoral roll revision.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Saturday alleged that demolition drives involving mosques and residential settlements in several parts of India were politically motivated and carried out without following proper legal procedures. The organisation claimed that recent actions in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi had disproportionately affected members of a particular community. It also raised concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and called for greater transparency in the process.
The organisation alleged that authorities had adopted a biased approach while carrying out demolition drives against religious structures and residential areas. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Vice President Salim Engineer said selective action against certain structures was a matter of grave concern and claimed that the demolitions were being justified in the name of development and security. He argued that such actions should not be carried out without giving affected people adequate legal protection and following established procedures.
Salim Engineer claimed that there was a difference in the way authorities treated structures belonging to different communities. He acknowledged that some Hindu structures had also been demolished but maintained that demolition should not be used as a routine method of governance or enforcement. According to him, authorities must follow the law consistently and ensure that people are not subjected to fear or uncertainty because of sudden action against their homes or places of worship.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind further alleged that the demolition drives were being used to create fear among sections of the population. The organisation said development and security concerns could not be used as grounds to bypass due process and called on governments and local authorities to ensure that any action involving property or religious structures was carried out in accordance with the law. The allegations reflect wider concerns over the use of demolition drives in different parts of the country.
Apart from the demolition issue, the organisation also expressed concern over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. It called for greater transparency in the exercise and stressed the need to ensure that eligible citizens were not unfairly excluded from voter lists. The organisation’s concerns come amid broader public discussions over the procedures used to verify and revise electoral records and the safeguards available to voters during such exercises.
The allegations made by the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind have added to the continuing debate over demolition drives, due process and electoral roll revisions in India. The organisation has urged authorities to adopt a fair and transparent approach while dealing with religious structures, residential settlements and voter records. Its statements remain allegations made by the organisation, and the concerns raised underline the need for legal procedures and official processes to be applied consistently and transparently.
