Jaishankar’s Bold China Visit: SCO Talks to Tackle Border Tensions and Trade!

India’s External Affairs Minister heads to Tianjin for SCO meeting, aiming to advance normalization and address critical issues like rare earth metal supplies.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Tianjin on July 15, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced Saturday. Hosted by China, the current SCO chair, the meeting will see Jaishankar join counterparts from Russia, Iran, Pakistan, and other member states to discuss cooperation and regional issues.

Jaishankar’s visit, his first since the 2020 India-China border standoff in eastern Ladakh, comes amid efforts to normalize ties. Key issues, including China’s halt on rare earth metal exports vital for India’s automobile and tech industries, are expected to be raised. The visit follows recent trips by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval, signaling renewed diplomatic engagement.

The SCO meeting follows a Modi-Xi agreement in Kazan on October 23 to revive dialogue mechanisms, including the Special Representatives (SR) talks on the 3,488-km boundary dispute. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi may visit India soon for SR discussions with Doval. The recent resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra after five years marks another step toward mending ties.
