Jaishankar, Israeli Foreign Minister Review West Asia Crisis And Hormuz Blockade

Jaishankar, Israeli FM discuss Hormuz blockade amid tensions.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing crisis in West Asia, including the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The talks came amid a deadlock in US-Iran negotiations and persistent tensions following the fragile two-week ceasefire brokered earlier by Pakistan.

According to readouts from both sides, the ministers exchanged views on Iran’s nuclear programme, freedom of navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, and the broader situation in Lebanon. Jaishankar is understood to have emphasised the need for de-escalation, protection of global energy supplies, and the safety of international shipping lanes, reflecting India’s concerns as a major importer of oil from the Gulf region. Sa’ar briefed his Indian counterpart on Israel’s perspective regarding Iran’s regional activities and the importance of a firm international stance against threats to maritime security.

The conversation forms part of India’s active diplomatic engagement with multiple stakeholders in the region. In recent days, Jaishankar has spoken with his counterparts from Iran, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, and Singapore, focusing on the West Asia conflict and the well-being of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf. India has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions, safe passage for merchant vessels, and the avoidance of actions that could further destabilise energy markets or endanger civilian infrastructure.

The US began enforcing its blockade of Iranian ports on April 13, following the collapse of direct talks in Islamabad. The measure has raised global concerns over potential spikes in oil prices and disruptions to nearly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne crude and LNG that passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Israel has publicly supported the American position, while countries like China have criticised the blockade as a risk to the ceasefire.

This latest call between Jaishankar and Sa’ar underscores India’s balanced approach of maintaining strong strategic ties with Israel while engaging key regional players, including Iran, to safeguard its energy security and economic interests. With the ceasefire under strain and the blockade now in effect, further diplomatic efforts are expected as major powers seek to prevent wider escalation in West Asia. The developments highlight the complex interplay of security, energy, and geopolitical interests in the region, with India positioning itself as a voice for stability and dialogue amid the US-Iran deadlock.
