Jairam Ramesh Calls EC Partisan, Incompetent

Congress accuses Election Commission of incompetence, partisanship.

The Congress party launched a blistering attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of "incompetence" and "blatant partisanship" in response to the poll body’s defense against allegations of "vote chori." The sharp rebuke came hours after Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and two election commissioners held a press conference to counter Congress’ claims of electoral irregularities, particularly those raised by Rahul Gandhi during the launch of the INDIA bloc’s 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Sasaram, Bihar.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed the EC’s assertion of impartiality as "laughable," citing "mountains of evidence" of favoritism toward the ruling BJP. "The EC’s claim of treating the ruling party and opposition equally is absurd in the face of undeniable bias," Ramesh posted on X, questioning whether the commission would adhere to the Supreme Court’s August 14 orders on electoral transparency. He criticized Kumar for failing to address Gandhi’s specific allegations, including claims of voter list manipulation in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Gandhi, who launched the 1,300 km yatra to rally against alleged electoral fraud, accused the EC of colluding with the BJP to "steal" votes through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The Congress alleges that the EC demanded an affidavit from Gandhi for his claims but not from BJP leaders, exposing its double standards. The party insists that the EC’s inaction on issues like duplicate voters and fake addresses undermines its credibility.

The yatra, supported by leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Tejashwi Yadav, aims to mobilize public support to protect democratic rights ahead of Bihar’s assembly polls. Ramesh emphasized that the EC’s failure to address systemic issues, coupled with its dismissive stance, has left it "thoroughly exposed" as a partisan entity. The Congress vowed to escalate its campaign, demanding accountability and reforms to ensure free and fair elections.
