School Reopens In Chhattisgarh’s Former Maoist Stronghold Jagargunda After Over 10 Years
Once a Maoist stronghold in Bastar, Jagargunda sees its school reopen with the bell ringing after more than ten years.
After more than a decade of silence, the school bell in Jagargunda rang again, symbolising a major transformation in a region once known as a Maoist stronghold. Once inaccessible and fraught with fear, the village is now witnessing the gradual return of normalcy, with children returning to classrooms and daily life resuming under the watch of local authorities.
Stepping into Jagargunda previously meant entering a zone where the presence of the state was minimal and fear was pervasive. The area was heavily monitored, with a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) gate controlling access. Entry required identity cards, vehicles were routinely checked, and the gate would close by evening, leaving the population effectively confined within a protected enclosure.
Today, that gate stands open around the clock, reflecting a dramatic change in the region’s security situation. While the physical presence of security forces remains, the strict curbs that once defined daily life have eased, allowing movement, commerce, and public activities to take place without constant restriction.

The landscape, still surrounded by dense forests, carries memories of a violent past. Burnt vehicles, broken culverts, and remnants of past explosions serve as silent reminders of Jagargunda’s history as the “unofficial capital” of Maoist influence in Bastar. Despite this, the reopening of the school signals hope and progress, marking the community’s efforts to reclaim normalcy and education for its younger generation.
For the residents of Jagargunda, the sound of the school bell is more than a routine; it is a testament to resilience and the possibility of a safer future. As classrooms fill again and daily life returns, the village illustrates how sustained security measures, combined with community rebuilding efforts, can transform regions once dominated by conflict into spaces of learning and growth.
