J-K Authorities Resume Internet Services Following Mehraj Malik Protests
Broadband services resume as restrictions ease in Doda.
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district restored broadband internet services, marking a significant step toward normalcy after a week of stringent restrictions triggered by the detention of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and J-K unit president Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act on September 8. Malik’s detention for allegedly disturbing public order sparked violent protests, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory measures, including a suspension of mobile and broadband internet services and curbs on public movement.
The easing of restrictions began on Saturday, September 13, when Deputy Inspector General of Police (Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range) Shridhar Patil, along with Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Mehta, met with civil society representatives, including members of the Beopar Mandal and Transport Association. Following assurances of cooperation from these groups, authorities lifted movement restrictions for six hours starting Saturday noon and committed to a phased restoration of services. By Sunday, broadband internet was back online, markets reopened, and additional security forces were withdrawn, signaling a gradual return to normalcy.
The civil society representatives, during the meeting, pledged their support to maintain public order and urged the administration to prioritize the restoration of essential services like internet, transport, and schools. They highlighted the severe hardships faced by residents, particularly after recent flood-like conditions in Doda, which caused significant economic losses. The community emphasized the urgent need for access to markets and connectivity to support recovery efforts and daily life.

DIG Patil commended the public’s role in thwarting attempts to disrupt peace and urged the business community to activate CCTV cameras to monitor potential troublemakers. He also called on shopkeepers and transport operators to remain vigilant and sensitize their workers to prevent further unrest. Deputy Commissioner Singh assured that issues related to the supply of essential commodities would be addressed within 24 hours, further easing public concerns.
The phased reopening of schools, resumption of transport services, and full restoration of mobile internet are planned pending further assessment of the ground situation. The administration’s collaborative approach with local stakeholders reflects a concerted effort to stabilize Doda after days of tension. However, the detention of Malik, a prominent political figure, continues to stir debate, with residents and observers watching closely as the district navigates its path to recovery and normalcy.
