ISRO’s 40-Storey Rocket to Launch 75-Tonne Satellite

Massive rocket to revolutionize India’s space ambitions

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan announced that the Indian Space Research Organisation is developing a colossal rocket, as tall as a 40-storey building, capable of placing a 75,000 kg satellite into low Earth orbit (LEO).

Speaking at Osmania University’s convocation, Narayanan highlighted the project as a monumental leap from India’s first launcher, built under Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, which had a 17-tonne lift-off mass and could carry only 35 kg to LEO.

This year, ISRO’s ambitious lineup includes the NAVIC satellite for navigation, the N1 rocket, and the launch of a 6,500 kg US communication satellite using Indian rockets. Additionally, ISRO plans to launch the Technology Demonstration Satellite (TDS) and GSAT-7R, a military communication satellite for the Indian Navy, replacing the existing GSAT-7 (Rukmini).

Narayanan revealed that India currently has 55 satellites in orbit, with plans to triple this number within three to four years. The announcement underscores ISRO’s growing prowess in global space exploration.

Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma presented Narayanan with an honorary Doctorate of Science at the convocation, recognizing his significant contributions to India’s space program. This development marks a bold step toward establishing India as a leading space power.
