Isro Satellite Spots Active Rain System Over Central India, Withdrawal Likely Post Sept 10

Isro satellite tracks active rain system as monsoon withdrawal nears mid-September.

The southwest monsoon remains active across several parts of India, with a low-pressure system over central India driving cloud formation and rainfall. Satellite imagery from the INSAT-3DS weather satellite has shown extensive convective cloud development over central and eastern regions, indicating continued atmospheric activity along the monsoon belt. The India Meteorological Department said the low-pressure area over west Jharkhand and adjoining regions had moved towards northeast Madhya Pradesh and nearby areas by 5:30 am on August 26. The system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.

The weather system is expected to move nearly west-northwestwards during the next 24 hours, potentially affecting rainfall over parts of central and northern India. Satellite imagery shows a broad cloud zone covering Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring eastern and northeastern states. Such low-pressure systems can draw moisture inland and support thunderstorms and showers. The current activity means the monsoon remains active despite signs that its overall strength could begin declining later in the season. Rainfall distribution, however, is expected to vary across different regions.

The longer-range weather outlook suggests that monsoon activity could gradually weaken after September 10. Forecast models indicate that an upper-level jet stream may shift southwards towards central India around that period, allowing drier air to spread across parts of northwest and central India. Reduced moisture availability could lead to a decline in widespread rainfall. If the predicted atmospheric pattern develops as expected, the early stages of southwest monsoon withdrawal could begin from northwestern India around the middle of September.

For now, the active low-pressure system is expected to continue supporting rainfall across parts of central and northern India. The system's movement will determine which areas receive the strongest showers over the coming days. Central and adjoining regions could continue experiencing periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as moisture remains available. Weather conditions may remain changeable as the system progresses west-northwestwards. Authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are likely to remain alert to localised heavy rainfall and associated weather disruptions.

Delhi-NCR, India: Rainfall activity in the Delhi-NCR region is expected to become less widespread on Wednesday as relatively drier winds strengthen and the main zone of atmospheric convergence shifts towards Uttar Pradesh. Most areas could remain largely dry during the morning, while daytime heating may trigger isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad could see short spells of moderate to heavy rain, while isolated showers may occur in Delhi and Gurgaon. Rainfall is expected to be more concentrated over eastern NCR and adjoining Uttar Pradesh.

The coming weeks will be important for India's monsoon season as weather systems continue to influence rainfall across the country. While the current low-pressure area is keeping monsoon conditions active, the expected shift in atmospheric circulation after September 10 could mark the beginning of a gradual seasonal transition. The eventual timing and pace of monsoon withdrawal will depend on how these weather patterns develop. For now, rainfall activity remains significant across parts of central India, with further changes expected as September approaches.
