ISRO Plans First Gaganyaan Uncrewed Mission Within Four Months
ISRO prepares for Gaganyaan’s first uncrewed mission this year.
ISRO is targeting the first uncrewed mission of the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme within the next four months, marking a major step towards India's first crewed space mission. ISRO Chairman Dr V Narayanan announced the timeline during the Third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, outlining an ambitious roadmap for India's human spaceflight and broader space exploration programmes. The mission will test key systems before astronauts are eventually sent into orbit.
Dr Narayanan said around 8,000 tests related to Gaganyaan had been successfully completed and the programme was now in its final phase. India plans to conduct three uncrewed missions before the crewed flight, with the first uncrewed mission scheduled for this year. Such a mission is designed to simulate the conditions of a human spaceflight without astronauts aboard, allowing ISRO to assess the launch vehicle, spacecraft and other critical systems before a crewed attempt.
The ISRO Chairman also outlined plans to realise 12 satellites and conduct eight launch vehicle missions during the current financial year. These missions are expected to support communication, navigation, Earth observation and scientific research. He stressed that India's growing requirements would require a much larger satellite fleet, estimating that the country would need 200 to 300 satellites within a five-year period. He also emphasised greater participation from private companies and space start-ups to meet the expanding demand.

Dr Narayanan pointed to the transformation of India's space sector following the reforms introduced in 2020, noting that the country now has around 440 space start-ups working in areas including launch vehicles, satellites and space applications. He also referred to recent achievements involving private industry and international cooperation, including Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram 1 mission and the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) programme. He stressed that India's indigenous capabilities, including cryogenic technology, have helped the country overcome earlier dependence on foreign technologies.
Beyond Gaganyaan, ISRO has a wide-ranging exploration agenda that includes Chandrayaan-4, Chandrayaan-5, a Venus mission and plans for a future Mars landing mission. India also aims to establish its own space station by 2035 and substantially expand its satellite capabilities over the coming years. These programmes build on earlier achievements such as Chandrayaan-1's discovery of evidence of water molecules on the Moon, Chandrayaan-3's successful lunar landing and the Aditya-L1 solar mission.
For ISRO, the immediate priority is completing the first Gaganyaan uncrewed mission safely and successfully. The programme is one of India's most complex technological efforts, requiring high reliability across the human-rated launch vehicle, crew module, life-support systems and recovery mechanisms. A successful test flight would represent an important milestone in India's effort to develop an independent human spaceflight capability and move closer to sending Indian astronauts into orbit aboard an Indian spacecraft.
