Israel Halts Strikes On Lebanon Amid US-Led Efforts To Sustain Ceasefire Talks

Israel pauses strikes on Lebanon amid US diplomatic intervention and ceasefire stabilization efforts.

Israel has reportedly paused its recent wave of airstrikes on Lebanon following diplomatic pressure from the United States, amid escalating regional tensions linked to the broader Israel–Hezbollah conflict and ongoing negotiations involving Washington and Tehran. The development comes after days of intense military activity that had significantly heightened fears of a wider regional escalation.

The escalation began earlier in the week when Israel carried out some of its heaviest strikes on Lebanon since renewed hostilities with Hezbollah intensified in March. According to reports, more than 300 people were killed and over 1,000 injured in the strikes, with Israel stating that most targets were linked to Hezbollah infrastructure and operatives. However, local accounts and footage from affected areas also indicated civilian casualties, further deepening international concern.

The situation prompted diplomatic intervention from the United States, with reports suggesting that US President Donald Trump personally urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scale down military operations in Lebanon. In remarks to NBC News, Trump said he had spoken to Netanyahu and encouraged a “low-key” approach, signalling Washington’s intent to stabilise the rapidly deteriorating situation.

A US official also confirmed plans for a diplomatic meeting next week to discuss ongoing ceasefire negotiations involving Israel and Lebanon. While neither government has officially confirmed the talks, the move is seen as part of broader US efforts to preserve a fragile ceasefire framework linked to parallel negotiations with Iran.

Meanwhile, reports from the ground indicated a temporary lull in airstrikes on Beirut on Friday, despite earlier evacuation warnings issued by Israeli authorities in parts of the capital. Lebanese officials have maintained that any meaningful negotiations with Israel would require a formal truce, while tensions on the southern border remain high with continued exchanges involving Hezbollah.

The conflict, rooted in decades of hostility between Israel and Hezbollah, has once again highlighted the volatility of the region. As diplomatic efforts intensify behind the scenes, uncertainty remains over whether the temporary pause in strikes will hold or if hostilities could escalate further in the coming days.
