Israel Eases Restrictions, Allows Church Access In Jerusalem During Easter

Israel allows pilgrims access to Jerusalem church for Easter

Israel has announced it will allow access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem during the Easter period, following widespread criticism over initial restrictions that had prevented pilgrims and worshippers from entering the site.

The decision comes after international outcry and pressure from religious authorities, who emphasised the church’s significance as one of Christianity’s holiest sites. Authorities had initially cited security concerns and ongoing regional tensions for restricting access, but the backlash highlighted the need to balance safety with religious freedoms.

Church officials welcomed the announcement, calling it “a relief for pilgrims worldwide” who travel to Jerusalem each year to observe Easter rituals. They added that preparations will be made to ensure orderly access, with measures in place to maintain security and crowd control while respecting the sanctity of the religious site.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is traditionally visited by thousands of Christian pilgrims during Holy Week, culminating in Easter Sunday services. The restrictions had sparked protests from local clergy, international Christian leaders, and advocacy groups, arguing that denying access to worshippers infringed upon religious rights.

Israeli authorities said that access will be carefully regulated, with designated time slots for different denominations to conduct rituals safely. Security forces will be deployed to ensure compliance with guidelines, preventing overcrowding and mitigating risks amid heightened tensions in the city.

The decision marks a rare reversal for Israeli officials, who have been cautious in permitting large-scale religious gatherings amid regional unrest. Analysts note that allowing access may also help ease diplomatic pressures, particularly from countries with significant Christian populations invested in the welfare of pilgrims visiting Jerusalem.

With Easter services now proceeding as planned, both local and international pilgrims are expected to converge on the church in the coming days. Religious leaders have called for calm and cooperation, emphasising that faith and devotion should take precedence while maintaining safety and order.
