Is Maharashtra Prepared for a Deadly Heatwave Season? Pune is Already Taking Action
Pune directs private hospitals to report heatstroke cases as Maharashtra strengthens summer heatwave preparedness.
With summer temperatures rising sharply, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed private hospitals to report severe heatstroke cases on the central government’s health monitoring portal as authorities intensify heatwave preparedness measures.
Health officials said hospitals must promptly notify authorities about serious cases to help track the impact of extreme heat and coordinate medical responses across the city. The advisory comes as temperatures begin climbing across Maharashtra, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
As part of preparedness efforts, the Pune Municipal Corporation has planned a 10-bed cold room facility at Kamala Nehru Hospital to treat severe heatstroke patients. Additional measures are also being implemented at primary health centres across the state to strengthen emergency response systems.

Authorities have also begun conducting workshops to train medical officers in government and private hospitals on identifying and managing heat-related illnesses. During these sessions, doctors have been advised on rapid response protocols and proper reporting procedures.
Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, Assistant Medical Officer at the Pune Municipal Corporation, said rapid cooling remains the most effective strategy to reduce illness and death caused by heatstroke. Officials stressed that early treatment and timely reporting will be crucial as temperatures continue to rise during the peak summer months. The civic body has urged healthcare institutions to remain alert and ensure adequate preparedness to manage potential heatwave-related emergencies.
