Iran Raises Red Flag Of Revenge At Qom Mosque Following Khamenei Killing
Red flag hoisted at Qom mosque; Alireza Arafi joins interim council after Khamenei killing.
In a rare and symbolic display of mourning and defiance, a red “flag of revenge” has been raised atop the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque in the holy city of Qom. The gesture comes after the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint U.S.-Israel airstrike on Tehran, signaling both grief and calls for retribution among his supporters. The Jamkaran Mosque holds deep significance for Shia Muslims, and the red banner, traditionally associated with vengeance, underscores the emotional and political impact of Khamenei’s death.
Iranian state media reported that the flag reflects the nation’s anger and determination in the wake of the strike. Khamenei, who led Iran since 1989, was a central figure in shaping the country’s domestic and foreign policies and played a key role in Iran’s regional influence. His sudden death has heightened tensions across the Middle East and triggered widespread reactions both domestically and internationally.
The airstrike on Tehran occurred on Saturday, targeting Khamenei and other strategic sites. Following the attack, there were reports of cheers in some areas of the Iranian capital, while other parts of the country observed mourning ceremonies. International reactions have been sharply divided, with U.S. and Israeli leaders framing the event as an opportunity to limit Iran’s regional influence, while Iranian officials have vowed strong retaliation.

In response to the leadership vacuum, Iran has appointed a temporary leadership council to manage the affairs of the state until a new supreme leader is selected. Alireza Arafi, a 66-year-old cleric and member of the Guardian Council, has joined the council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. The council will oversee state matters and ensure continuity of governance during this transitional period.
The symbolism of the red flag over the Jamkaran Mosque carries deep historical and religious meaning. In Shia tradition, a red banner often represents unresolved bloodshed and a call for justice, signaling both a spiritual and political message. Analysts suggest that the gesture is intended to unite Khamenei’s supporters and project resilience in the face of foreign intervention.
As Iran navigates this period of uncertainty, the combination of heightened emotions, leadership changes, and regional instability raises concerns about potential escalations. The red flag stands not only as a tribute to the deceased leader but also as a warning to domestic and international audiences that Iran’s government and its supporters remain determined to defend their nation’s interests.
