Iran Announces New Authority To Manage Strait Of Hormuz Maritime Traffic
Iran announces new authority to manage Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing maritime tensions.
Iran’s top security authority has announced the formation of a new administrative body to oversee operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital maritime chokepoint that handles a significant share of global energy shipments. The move comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing disruptions to maritime traffic in the waterway.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the Supreme National Security Council said the newly established Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) would provide “real-time updates on the #Hormuz_Strait operations and latest developments.” The announcement was also shared by accounts linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, underscoring the body’s security-linked mandate.
While detailed operational responsibilities of the new authority remain unclear, Iranian state-linked media have previously described it as part of a broader system aimed at strengthening national oversight over the strait. Reports have suggested that shipping vessels passing through the waterway could be subject to regulatory instructions and coordination mechanisms, including official communications through designated channels.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, with a substantial portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it. Any disruption in the passage has historically triggered concerns in global markets due to its strategic importance.
Iran has stated in recent months that maritime traffic through the strait will not return to its pre-crisis status, indicating a shift toward tighter control and potential toll-based systems for vessels using the route. Officials have also claimed that revenue collection from transit operations has already begun, while further regulatory frameworks are expected to be unveiled in the coming period.
