IPS Suicide Case: Chandigarh Court Directs IAS Officer to Identify Husband’s Body

Court demands IAS spouse identify Haryana officer's remains for autopsy.

In a significant judicial step, a Chandigarh court has directed IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, wife of deceased Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, to submit a response on identifying his body for postmortem examination. The order, issued on October 14, 2025, by Judicial Magistrate First Class Raminder Kaul, addresses an application from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) amid concerns over preserving forensic evidence.

The directive is linked to FIR No. 156, registered on October 9 at Police Station Sector 11, Chandigarh, under sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, for abetment to suicide, and sections 3(1)(r) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, suggesting possible caste-related harassment.

The court's decision emphasizes the urgency highlighted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who argued that immediate postmortem at PGIMER Chandigarh is crucial to retain vital evidence, such as toxicological traces or injury details. Amneet Kumar must file her reply by October 15, 2025, or the matter will proceed ex parte. Additionally, police have requested production of the deceased's laptop, potentially holding digital clues to motives including professional or personal disputes. The SIT's push reflects standard protocols in suspicious deaths, aiming to rule out foul play beyond the initial suicide report.

Y Puran Kumar was found dead on October 7, 2025, at his Sector 24 residence, with preliminary indications of suicide by hanging. The inclusion of SC/ST Act provisions has intensified scrutiny, prompting examinations of his background and any prior complaints. Investigators are analyzing scene evidence, colleague interviews, and records to assess factors like work stress in the Haryana Police cadre. This case underscores systemic issues in law enforcement, including mental health support for officers facing high-pressure roles.

Concurrently, IPS officer Om Prakash Singh took additional charge as Haryana DGP on October 15, 2025, following Shatrujeet Kapur's leave placement amid the probe. This leadership transition ensures operational stability while the investigation continues independently. As the deadline approaches, the outcome could influence broader discussions on accountability and procedural delays in official deaths, with forensic insights expected to provide clarity in the coming days.
