Intoxicated Trainee Constable Fires At Senior Officer During Dispute

MP police trainee arrested after firing rifle at colleague, who escaped unhurt.

A head constable narrowly escaped injury when an allegedly intoxicated trainee constable fired at him with a service rifle at a police training school in Umaria, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday night, police reported. The incident, which stemmed from a dispute, has led to the immediate arrest and suspension of the accused trainee.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Lovely Soni, stationed at the training school, identified the head constable as Chhote Lal Kol, who was unharmed after the bullet missed him. The accused, trainee constable Kamal Singh Maravi, reportedly arrived late for duty in an intoxicated state, sparking a heated argument with Kol. The altercation escalated, resulting in Maravi firing his service rifle at his senior colleague.

Following the incident, a police team apprehended Maravi on the spot. He has been suspended from service, and departmental action has been initiated against him, Soni confirmed. Maravi was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody pending further investigation.

The incident raises concerns about discipline and oversight within police training facilities, prompting authorities to review protocols to prevent similar occurrences. The Umaria police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the event, emphasizing accountability and safety within the force.
