Indore Gears Up for 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' 2.0: Aiming to Green the Cleanest City Again

Indore, India’s cleanest city and a Guinness World Record holder for planting 11 lakh saplings in 24 hours in July 2024, is set to launch the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' 2.0 campaign today. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will kick off the ambitious plantation drive by planting a sapling at a park near Keshar Bagh Road’s cloth market, announced Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday.

The Indore Municipal Corporation has allocated five acres for this initiative, with a goal to plant 51 lakh saplings through widespread community participation. On the first day alone, 1,100 saplings will take root, setting the tone for the city’s continued environmental push. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav is also slated to join the drive on July 12, adding momentum to the campaign.

“Last year, Indore’s citizens united to set a world record for planting the most saplings in a single day. We invite everyone to join us again in making our city greener,” said Vijayvargiya, a BJP MLA from Indore. The 2024 record saw over 30,000 participants, including more than 40 non-resident Indians from Indore, plant 12.4 lakh saplings at Revati Range hillock on Indore-Ujjain Road.

Prominent figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bollywood actors, and local sportspersons, also contributed to the effort. Vijayvargiya recently shared that all 12.4 lakh saplings planted last year at Revati Range are thriving, thanks to measures like regular watering, gardening, and fencing by the municipal corporation.

“Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, these saplings are now growing into trees, transforming Indore’s landscape,” he said. The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, launched by PM Modi on June 5, 2024, has already seen nearly 140 crore trees planted nationwide, with Madhya Pradesh contributing 55 million. As Indore embarks on this new chapter, the city aims to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership.
