Indore Administration Responds Swiftly to Mhow Water Contamination Crisis

Survey teams and temporary hospitals deployed after suspected stomach infections in Patti Bazaar area.

The Indore district administration in Madhya Pradesh has launched an urgent response to a suspected water contamination outbreak in Mhow’s Patti Bazaar locality, deploying 12 survey teams and setting up two temporary hospitals to treat affected residents. On Friday, teams surveyed over 80 households following reports of gastrointestinal illnesses, identifying at least 12 suspected cases of stomach infection linked to contaminated water supply.

Local residents claim the number of affected individuals could be higher, with around 24 people reportedly falling ill after consuming water from the area. The administration acted promptly under the instructions of Collector Shivam Verma, establishing medical facilities in the neighbourhood of approximately 2,500 people to provide immediate care. Eight patients are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while two have recovered and been discharged.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani confirmed that blood and water samples are being collected from the Patti Bazaar area for laboratory testing to pinpoint the contamination source. To strengthen paediatric care in the affected zone, the administration has enlisted local paediatricians along with two additional child specialists. Public awareness efforts are underway through announcements urging residents to boil water before drinking and avoid outside food.

Preventive measures include the distribution of ORS packets, glucose, zinc supplements, and chlorine tablets to households in the locality. The swift intervention comes amid lingering concerns from a previous water contamination incident in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area last month, where seven deaths—including that of a five-month-old boy—were officially linked to tainted water. While locals have claimed higher fatalities in that outbreak, a government status report to the High Court on January 15 confirmed seven deaths.

Authorities are focusing on containment and treatment to prevent further spread in Patti Bazaar, emphasizing hygiene and safe water practices among residents. Ongoing monitoring and sample analysis will guide further actions to ensure public health safety in the region.
