Indirapuram Fire Destroys Jhuggis, Residents Lose Homes, Savings and Identity Papers

A massive fire tore through nearly 150 to 200 jhuggis in Indirapuram’s Kanawani area on Thursday, reducing an entire settlement to ashes and leaving hundreds of residents, mostly migrant workers from Bihar, displaced overnight. The blaze, which is suspected to have originated near a plastic factory, quickly spread to the adjoining shanties, intensifying due to highly combustible materials used in the informal settlement.

Firefighters rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported and worked for hours to bring the flames under control. However, by the time the fire was contained, large sections of the settlement had already been destroyed. Residents described scenes of panic and chaos as families scrambled to save whatever belongings they could, while thick smoke continued to rise from the smouldering remains.

In the aftermath of the disaster, residents returned to the site of what once was their homes, only to find heaps of charred tin sheets, burnt wood, and ash. Many stood silently amid the ruins, trying to process the scale of loss that had unfolded within a matter of hours. Personal belongings, household items, and savings accumulated over years were reportedly wiped out in the fire.

What stood out most in the aftermath was not just the loss of homes, but the desperate search for identity documents. Residents were seen digging through the debris looking for Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter IDs, and children’s birth certificates—papers they said were crucial to prove their existence and access government aid or rehabilitation support.

Many of the affected families said they had migrated from Bihar in search of work and had been living in the area for years, building fragile lives in makeshift shelters. The sudden destruction has now left them not only homeless but also uncertain about their future, as they struggle to recover both material losses and essential documents needed for official recognition and assistance.

Local authorities are expected to assess the extent of damage and provide relief measures, though residents say immediate support is urgently needed for food, shelter, and documentation recovery. As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of informal settlements located near industrial zones.
