Indigo Passanger Detained at Mumbai Airport Over 'Bomb' Joke, Let Off With Warning

A 55-year-old passenger was detained at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after he allegedly joked about having a “bomb” in his bag while preparing to board an IndiGo flight to Delhi. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, triggered an immediate security response and temporarily disrupted flight operations before the passenger was later released with a warning.

According to officials, the incident occurred at the boarding gate of Terminal 2 during routine checks of passengers’ hand luggage. Airline Assistant Security Manager Omprakash Rajbhar and Security Officer Ravindra Rokde were asking passengers about prohibited items such as matches, lighters, scissors and liquids when the passenger, identified as Anuj Jayram Suvarna, allegedly remarked that there was a “bomb” in his bag.

The remark prompted airline staff to immediately alert their superiors and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at the airport. Suvarna was removed from the flight and taken into custody by security personnel. The CISF later handed him over to Sahar police for further legal action following a complaint by the airline security officers.

During questioning, Suvarna reportedly told police that he had made the remark as a joke. Police registered a case and arrested him in connection with the incident, but he was subsequently released after being issued a warning notice. Officials maintained that the remark caused panic among passengers and disrupted normal airport and airline operations.

As part of standard security procedures following the threat, all passengers were deplaned and the aircraft was evacuated. The CISF and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducted detailed checks of the aircraft, cargo and passengers’ luggage to determine whether there was any actual security threat. The inspection continued for several hours.

No suspicious object was found during the searches, officials said. The Mumbai-Delhi flight was eventually cleared for departure after all security checks were completed. Authorities noted that the incident caused significant disruption and inconvenience to passengers and the airline, while the police investigation into the passenger’s conduct remains underway.
