India’s Top General: Old Weapons Can’t Win New Wars
CDS Anil Chauhan cites Operation Sindoor to push for cutting-edge, indigenous defence tech to counter modern threats like drones.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan delivered a powerful call to action at a New Delhi workshop on UAV and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) indigenisation, warning that “we can’t win today’s warfare with yesterday’s weapons.” Emphasizing the need for India to modernize its defence capabilities, he stressed that tomorrow’s technology is essential to stay ahead in modern conflicts.
Citing India’s Operation Sindoor in May, Chauhan revealed that Pakistan’s deployment of unmanned drones and loitering munitions was effectively neutralized through kinetic and non-kinetic countermeasures, with no damage to Indian military or civilian infrastructure. “Recent conflicts show drones can shift the tactical balance,” he noted, underscoring their growing role in warfare.
Chauhan urged a shift away from reliance on imported technologies, stating, “Dependence on foreign systems weakens our preparedness.” He advocated for robust indigenisation of drone and anti-drone technologies to bolster India’s strategic autonomy. The CDS highlighted the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic countermeasures to tackle emerging aerial threats, reinforcing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence innovation.
